Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

Pontiac Firebird Trans Am History

The third generation Pontiac Firebird was introduced in 1981 alongside its Chevrolet twin, the Camaro. The two-door coupe was in production until 1992 and was available with a variety of engines including a 2.5 litre 4 cylinder, 2.8 V6, 3.1 V6, 3.8 V6, 5.0 V8 and 5.7 litre V8. They were the first Firebirds with factory fitted fuel injection. The new model was 8 inch shorter, and an inch narrower and 500lb lighter than its predecessor and boasted a drag coefficient of 0.33 (with the Trans Am model having an even better 0.32 coefficient and being further reduced by 1985 to 0.29). The new suspension was more advanced and aggressive, rivalling the Corvette’s handling. The third generation was also the first to boasts an opening glass hatchback although a notchback and a convertible version were also available.
